In Which I Cave & Purchase An 'It' Shoe: The Aquazzura Christy Flats

There's no way avoiding it; every season there will be a handful of accessories dubbed the "it" item, The Must Have of The Season, etc. I typically avoid this type of chatter in magazines and blogs because I think it promotes wasteful behavior: The buying of new items in your closet, not because it's your style, but because it's covetable. This season there's a lot of press about lace-up flats, which made beauitful appearances on the Michael Kors runway (and others) complimenting minimalist, classic outfits that I felt a jolt of inspiration for. When I saw them parading in video segments on Style.com, I knew I'd attempt to incorporate this regardless of trend.

Fortunately, the lace ups became a trend and there were plenty of other options available, but none that came close to the original design of these Aquazzura flats, with their dainty leather straps and criss-cross ornamentation around a pointed toe. I loved the Aquazzura flats because they gave me ballet dancer feels and I like the way that visual plays with the idea of my wardrobe and myself — the thoughts of Degas paintings I stared at forever and delicate tulle floating behind strictly straight toned legs and jelly fish tentacle hands.

So long story short, I bought 'em. I actually bought two, one in a 7.5 and one in an 8. The verdict? I kept the 8, which is what I expected. They run 1/2 a size small, and beware the pointy toe is extra pointy so don't stub your feet on the pavement and ruin the leather, but they look every bit as special as they looked on the runway, or in the street style photos

I got mine from Saks Fifth Avenue during a pre-order a couple months ago, but at the time Barneys New York also had them. Net-a-Porter also carries them, but everything sells out so quickly on Net-a-Porter I wouldn't even try without calling customer service first to be on their waiting list.
